The growing trend and popularity of restored vintage military
aircraft has also created an interest in the history of their service,
adding not only an obviously higher dollar value to some now
priceless antiquities in aero museums, but a curiosity as to
where they saw action and who flew them, hence the interest of
the various logos that identify particular fighter wings,
(Jagdgeschwaders).
This has always been an integral part of the scale modelling
world; unbeknownst to many, scale models are not just toys for
children, but historical accounts of particular aeroplanes, flown
by specific pilots belonging to an individual group in a particular
theatre of war.
One of the fascinations for German insignia is their flamboyant
nature. Unlike ‘nose art’, which has adorned aircraft since the
beginning of aviation, squadron logos of other nations, the
British for example, were always more conservative; perhaps it’s
a reflection of a country’s people. Whatever the case, German
Jagdgeschwader logos have made their way into the realm of
pop art.
Luftmerch now presents some of these logos to you. We’ve
included some of the more famous fighter units and a Royal Air
force symbol thrown in for good measure. We aim to add to the
collection in future, perhaps in response to your requests.
